I guess I'll go ahead and break this rumor. According to a highly placed music industry source (alright, a guy who has a record deal with a smallish indie label), Ted Leo is retiring to work on his doctorate and eventually become an English professor. That's right, not a pharmacology professor. This is sad. He's been an indie Rock of Gibraltar, holding down the solid guitar god status when so many will quickly sell out. Who's going to be left? Malkmus hasn't made a good record since right after Pavement broke up. Doug Martsch can't really hack it on his own, either, though I think there's a new Built to Spill album coming. GBV just broke up, too (is Bob Pollard an indie guitar god? dicuss...).
Oh, and please, let me address the absolute horror called "Beverly Hills." I mean the new =W= single, though the city of BH is pretty horrific, too. What...the...fuck. Jesus, lord, I hope Rivers is playing a horribly cruel joke. It sounds like that Steve Miller "Space Cowboy" song. And TALKING GUITAR?! Rivers, you're awesome, but you're not Framp "awesome." I can dig on Frampton Comes Alive, but only in the most ironic of ways. I don't want to feel ironic about a =W= song, I want it to love me in a serious, meaningful, slightly emo way. May 10th, I'll find out if I can continue being the same =W= fan I once was; I don't know how I can go on if more than half of their catalog blows ass.
Well, "When A Fool Becomes A King" just popped up on my iTunes, and that always cheers me up.
